Professor Carroll inspires those of us who suffered through undergraduate programs in English with the hope that the field will not always be as it is now. A relevant, insightful and comprehensive perspective on the humanities has been sorely lacking in literature departments for many years. Let's hope that horror at the prospect of employing the discipline of social science (first year statistics should not pose too grave a threat)does not scare off potential students.
